We were able to spend our Christmas-Eve-eve feeding the people of Magisterio, Mexico. It was a lot of fun and really good to see that my kids can work hard all day without complaint. Our contribution was so small in comparison to what we came home with. I feel like I need to adopt the saying, "Give more, want less."

I am so touched by the volunteers running this program. They are such Christ-like examples of service. They give and give and all they get in return are hugs. Brenda, in the hot pink has been living in Puerto Vallarta for 5 years running this program with her husband Jon. They left their family in Canada to service this community.

I'm touched by the multi-millionaire who owns Paradise Village, Graziano. He is a self-made millionaire who seems the benefit of helping others. He is building a 92 unit housing complex that will take these squatters off the dirt roads and give them a roof. He also donated these 2 truck loads of food we passed out.

There are so many organizations trying to do good, yet the major problems of this world are still so present. So many people deal with dirty drinking water, hunger, lack of education, poverty, sex trafficking and slavery, political unrest, war, disease, lack of health care, and on and on. If only there were good solutions. After reading books and watching documentaries and learning about some of these problems, real solutions seem fleeting. I secretly wish I could pick an issue, say clean drinking water, and fix it. I know its not possible, so I've resolved that I just have to do what little I can and hope it matters. One goal for 2012 is to spend a little less time "consuming" and a little more time "sharing."

Tessa is our Old English Sheepdog. She was bred by an ultimate dog lover in Texas. He decided to take her back this summer to train her and winner her a championship free of charge. All we had to do was get her there. She was gone seven months. My kids and husband had a hard time with that. She's home now. She's very different than when she left. She's behaved. She's pretty. She's calm. I've started to get how dogs can be part of the family. I'm not a natural animal lover. They're cute and all, as long as I don't have to touch them or smell them. I'm feeling differently though. She's kinda fun.

We've been trying to decide what to do with her. We got her thinking my 8 year old would like to "show" her. She just makes you smile when you see her. She attracts people everywhere we go. She's very unique here in Utah, and too much fun not to share somehow. We're thinking we might start by making her a therapy dog and taking her places like the children's hospital. Lucy had a dog visitor while in primary children's. She would definitely break up the monotony for kids who are in the hospital long term. I'll keep you apprised.

Blogging has been unappealing to me lately. I feel strange posting about frivolous things when there are so many more important events happening in life. I feel that way towards my business too. It's so unimportant in the scheme of things. I guess I'm an all or nothing kinda girl. I feel weird posting about meaningless things I do with my time/money when people are going through such hard times. She Changed Me

My sister and her husband lost their beautiful baby girl yesterday. She was only on this earth for a short 15 months but she was such a presence. Everyone who knew her fell in love with her. Her spirit was so strong and vibrant.

Lucy's short life has brought so many people to their knees, pleading to their Father in Heaven. She has brought me so much closer to my Savior. I believe one of Lucy's missions while on this earth was to teach us to see life through our spiritual eyes. To turn to the Savior to find answers and understanding. As section 101 says, “Wherefore, fear not even unto death; for in this world your joy is not full, but in me (Jesus Christ), your joy is full.”

I remember hearing stories of when our brother passed away. My oldest sister and I were were most likely to understand our mother’s pain. But Eliza, the baby of the family, was the one who would sit by her side, day after day offering comfort; understanding her pain. She helped our mom through an extremely painful time. She is so empathetic. During the darkest hours of Liza's life she offered those around her comfort, and said so wisely, "Lucy was not just mine."

I'm so grateful we know the plan of happiness. This life is not the end for their little family. Lucy will be with them again. This life will be extra long for Chuck and Eliza, but someday they will be together again. I can't imagine anything harder than what they have and will yet have to go through, but I know they will get through it. My prayer is that we can learn to see with our spiritual eyes so that veil which separates us from Lucy can grow thin.

Joseph Smith teaches us, “All your losses will be made up to you in the resurrection, provided you continue faithful. By the vision of the Almighty I have seen it.”

Thank you Lucy for changing me. Through my minimal sacrifices in your behalf the Lord has changed me. He has softened my heart and brought me closer to Him. I am changed after holding you in my arms and partaking of your sweet little spirit. I am changed from the countless times I dropped to my knees to plead with Him in your behalf. My journal is laced over the last year with spiritual experiences that have happened to me and my family because of your little life. Lucy, you have changed me in ways no one else could and I am eternally indebted to you for that. I will always love you. xoxo

No, I'm not pregnant but I feel like I'm ready to nest. With the kids going back to school today, and my whopping 9 hours to myself a week, I have lots of projects in mind. My first priority is to get ready for Holy Cow. But on the side I want to do lots of canning, harvesting in the garden, and re-decorating. I'm working on my youngest's bedroom right now. I'd also really like to turn my dining room into a library/study.

Heavy Hearts

I just can't focus on anything else right now. Little Lucy, my niece, is in the CICU at Primary Children's. Her open heart surgery 6 weeks ago was unsuccessful and she will need another one next Wednesday. There are many more risks this time around and things seem much more serious. My sister and her husband are such troopers. Lucy is such a trooper. Thank you for all your prayers.

My very first harvest

My husband comes from an amazing gardening family. My dad always had something growing in our backyard. You'd think we would have a pretty good shot at being good gardeners but that hasn't been the case. We have tried a few times over the years but have never made it to harvest time without completely giving up. After a few too many years of this dirty little secret in the corner of my backyard I decided it was time to take things into my own hands.After a lot of work and some great help from my husband and my amazing friend (yes, she did the sprinklers all by herself-I watched and learned) this is the finished product.
My dirty little secret is now those amazing (but tiny) strawberries. Hopefully I can figure out how to get them a little bigger.

My kids are all growing up and I am changing. I have more time to think. There's no diapers to change, bottles to make, midnight feedings or crying my eyes out every night do to sheer exhaustion. I feel like I'm entering a new stage in my life, with lots in store for me. I have time to think outside myself and my little family. I look for opportunities everywhere I go. I'm excited for the future. I never thought I'd get here. When you're in the thick of babies, the light at the end of the tunnel is so dim that some days you can't even see it. Trust me, it comes. You just have to hold on and try to find the small little joys to get you through (I'm sounding so depressing, sorry!) I know this next stage is temporary too. It won't be long before I am dealing with teenagers! Scary! I'll take it as long as it lasts. I'm in a good place.

Easter Recap

If your weekend was like mine you got plenty of peeps, eggs and little pieces of Easter grass all over the house. I was also fortunate enough to be richly fed at church. I am still on a high from my meetings and would like to share this with you.

From Jeffrey R Holland, Brothers and sisters, one of the great consolations of this Easter season is that because Jesus walked such a long, lonely path utterly alone, we do not have to do so. His solitary journey brought great company for our little version of that path—the merciful care of our Father in Heaven, the unfailing companionship of this Beloved Son, the consummate gift of the Holy Ghost, angels in heaven, family members on both sides of the veil, prophets and apostles, teachers, leaders, friends. All of these and more have been given as companions for our mortal journey because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the Restoration of His gospel. Trumpeted from the summit of Calvary is the truth that we will never be left alone nor unaided, even if sometimes we may feel that we are. Truly the Redeemer of us all said: “I will not leave you comfortless: [My Father and] I will come to you [and abide with you].” 20

My other plea at Easter time is that these scenes of Christ’s lonely sacrifice, laced with moments of denial and abandonment and, at least once, outright betrayal, must never be reenacted by us. He has walked alone once. Now, may I ask that never again will He have to confront sin without our aid and assistance, that never again will He find only unresponsive onlookers when He sees you and me along His Via Dolorosa in our present day. May we declare ourselves to be more fully disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, not in word only and not only in the flush of comfortable times but in deed and in courage and in faith, including when the path is lonely and when our cross is difficult to bear. This Easter week and always, may we stand by Jesus Christ “at all times and in all things, and in all places that [we] may be in, even until death,” 21 for surely that is how He stood by us when it was unto death and when He had to stand entirely and utterly alone.

Two Great Movies

Last week we saw two great movies, in the movie theater. I guess we are entering a new phase in life where all our children will sit through a movie in a theater. It's a great stage. If you're not here yet, I promise...it will come for you too.

My dad told me once, "a good vacation is one which changes your perspective on life."

I'd like to add, a good film is one which takes you to a new place in the world.

So we saw African Cats

We lived among the African wildlife for an hour and a half. Thrilling and so amazing. We all walked out asking, how did they film that?

And Rio

Where we basked in the 3d-cartoon-version-sun of Rio De Janeiro and soared over the city on a paraglider. It was almost as good as a vacation.

If you're itchin for a trip, just go see one of these instead.

Have you ever heard how much I love the Little Gym?
Well, I do. Very much. It all started with my second child. When she was two her grandma was asking her a question and my 4-year-old son interjected, "she don't talks Gammie."
Well, she didn't. We were told she had Speech Apraxia. A speech disorder where the muscles aren't working right in the mouth. Kids start to talk, realize they aren't saying things right, and withdrawn and regress.

We moved from CA back to UT where the speech therapy was a little more lax. I decided that I wasn't going to wait for her to "grow out of it" but was going to be proactive and help her however I could.
I remembered that she was also tested by a physical therapist who told me she was 6 months delayed and explained when one system is off others can be too. When you fix one, the others usually follow.
I decided to enroll her in a few programs (Little Gym and Kindermusic).
The philosophies and teaching styles were night and day.
Here's how the Little Gym teaches...
-Every child learns differently. Some need to explore and see things for themselves, while others observe.
-in the parent-child class, parents are to participate in group activities and encourage their child to also-not to force or demand. I have run around in circles many times all by myself.
-There's lots of praise, no criticism (they get enough of that at home, right?)
-They try new things and see themselves improve.
-They overcome fears and encourage eachother.

I have seen so many moms get frustrated because their child won't participate. But what I try to tell them when I see the teacher isn't trying at all(in a nice, not-so-pushy way) is that they are participating, just in their own way, on their own time-line and pushing will only frustrate all involved.

I attended my youngest two kids' "show week" this week and realized this might be our last class at the Little Gym. They are getting older, and have had enough (at least for now) and it made me a little sad. If I were to endorse anything for kids it would be this! It builds a lot of things but most importantly it builds confidence, and that's all my second child needed to progress in her speech.

I presented the idea of "FEED THE CHILDREN VALLARTA" to my kids' school for their December service project and they loved it. They held a "Penny War." Each class had a jar in which they would collect pennies each day. For 5 minutes in the morning the kids could use any silver coins they brought to "bomb" other classes. when they put silver coins in other classes jars, it would count against their pennies. All I have to say is BRILLIANT! There was so much hype from the kids that the school ended it a week early!
These gradeschoolers raised $2400 for other grade school kids in Mexico.
Way to go Cougars!

I am so grateful for a loving Heavenly Father who hears and answers prayers. He answered our prayers this morning with out little Lucy. He spared her and we are so grateful for that miracle. Thank you all who prayed on her behalf. Heaven was flooded with prayers this morning.

If you've never had a 4-year-old, you really should try it sometime. They are the funniest little people. Just a few things my 4-year-old has said in the last few days...

After lunchtime prayer, "I wish Jesus could eat lunch with me. Does Jesus have food? I bet he doesn't have peanut butter sandwiches."

"did Jesus make this house?" after a poor explanation from me, "I bet Santa made it. I bet Santa is Jesus' son."

If you need a good laugh, just hang out with a 4-year-old and you are bound to be cheered up.

Because of increased property values, families and children who have previously been living at and off of the dump are now displaced. I applied for a wholesale account with the company that manufactures Amy Butler's rugs in June or something just so I could afford/justify this rug. I'm finally getting it in October. Isn't it lovely? Can't wait. I needed a new look with my blue walls.

Oh, I also got a new light fixture. I won't go into the details of my crazy 48 hours to get it and install it (thanks mom) in time for a baby shower I was hosting, but its here and up and I love it! It gives off no light at all, but who needs function when you have fashion, right? I'll have to give you a shot of the whole room once the rug is in!

I know, a very self-indulgent week.

Lucy's Turn

We will all be praying for this sweet little girl.
Her surgery comes much sooner than expected and might turn into
more than one depending on what the doctors find when they
go into her tiny little heart. We hope and pray for the best.

All in a day's work

So I got it done! Well, kind of. I think I need to re-paint it one shade darker, but that can be tomorrow (or maybe the next day).
I used Benjamin Moore's Seaside Resort.
I stuck vinyl on my old black door for the numbers then painted over them.
I got the Urns at Roberts (I think they were mis-priced because they were $15 for both! -Oh, I spray-painted them black),
the wreath at Roberts (and spray painted it silver),
the crows at the dollar store and the chair from the back yard.
All in all I only spent $47! Pretty cheap make-over!

This Morning

I decided my door needs a face-lift. I have been thinking this for months (maybe years) but this morning I decided it needed to happen TODAY! I can't decide between a light gray with with a bold bright wreath or a bold bright door with a gray wreath. I guess you'll see when I'm done. (Lets see if I can get it done by tonight-that's my goal anyways!)

This is how my night went (after being home all week with my 4 kids and no dad)

9:00pm-Hubby calls from Hawaii to tell me he's headed to the airport

12:45am-Hubby calls to tell me his plane is missing an engine part (What?) and he wouldn't be leaving until a new part was flown in from Honolulu (second flight from HI this year with engine trouble-stupid delta). Said he'll text me with an update.

1:45am-Check phone, no update

2:45am-Check phone, no update

3:45am-Check phone, no update

4:45am-you get the point

6:15am-someone starts crying so now I'm awake enough to get online and check flight status...still in Hawaii! Text hubby..."stupid, stupid, delta! You're still there?"

6:30am-Phone rings, he's just leaving and he proceeds to tell me that he sat on the tarmac while the mechanic put the new part in the engine. He heard the engine turn on then off with some terrible noises. Next thing, a lady over the intercom comes on and says they will be boarding now. He tells me he loves me and to tell the kids he loves them if I don't see him again.
Lovely!

7:00am-Check flight status.

7:30am-Check flight status.

8:00am-Check flight status.

8:30am-You get the point.

11:00am-Find awesome new website where you can actually watch the plane in the sky. Who knew a website you bring such relief? Sounds dumb, but seeing that little airplane moving closer and closer to shore was a big relief. They'll even text you with alerts!

I am getting a little sick and tired of doom and gloom. It's everywhere I turn and it's just not good for my psyche (do I have a psyche?). I'm deeming my home, my car, and my blog (that's about all I have control over in this world) doom and gloom FREE. I've decided to read everything I can find written by Jeffrey R Holland, one of the twelve apostles of my church (Richard G will be next). He is such an amazingly happy and hopeful man. Living in Utah, I am used to the late summer afternoon thunderstorms that roll in and roll out in a New York minute. I actually really enjoy a good ol' storm when I can sit on my mom's back porch and look over the whole valley and watch the clouds make their way up from the south to us in the north.I have never, in my 13 years as a Utahn, experienced thunder for 48 hours straight. These last two days have been amazing_annoying_ear-piercing_house-shaking_ready-to-drive-me-crazy kinda wonder-light-nin ! I don't think people believed my when I told them how loud it was. Here's proof. A tree in our school-yard 1 and a half blocks from our house. These pictures don't do it justice, but it looked like someone set off a bomb in the top of this tree. There were pieces everywhere!

Old English Sheepdog

Meet Tessa. The newest member of our family. We have had dogs in the past but none quite like her. She was definitely the biggest investment and has been our most enjoyable. She's happy and smart and great with my kiddies. I think that's why this breed is referred to as the "nanny dog". We got a dog trainer to come to our house and teach us the basics, which I highly recommend. I feel like it's made having a puppy really easy.

As we celebrate our country's birthday this month I have been thinking a lot about my life. It just can't get much better. I was born in a remarkable time in the world's history, filled with privileges and conveniences that not many in the scheme of things gets to experience. I was born in a great nation that protects our freedoms (if you don't believe that, read Half the Sky and see what so many women around the world experience). My youngest is out of diapers, my oldest is starting to babysit a little, my kids are all happy and somewhat :) well adjusted. I have a religion that teaches me how to be happy and so many people around me that love me. I live in a beautiful place that's safe and clean.

There are so many things to make us happy and for some reason that seems like a fleeting characteristic. What makes you happy? Sometimes we all need a little reminder, right?

Here's a few things on my list today...

-warm weather

-holidays

-high-pitched baby voices

-reassurance from a preschool teacher

-sleeping in

-popsicles

-planning and thinking about upcoming family celebrations

-fresh paint on the walls.

The Hunger Project

June is probably our slowest month here, but we were able to raise $66 to donate to The Hunger Project, a wonderful organization that empowers women to change their lives which in turn stops hunger. Thanks everyone!!!

My Brother

My brother returned home yesterday from a 2 year mission for our church. He served in Ventura, California where he shared our beliefs with the people there. I'm so proud of him and his service. What a selfless thing for a 19 year old to give up two years of his young life to help others find truth. Missionary work and sharing the gospel is a big part of our church. CJane explains it so much better than I could in this post. We have a great gift of knowledge that we want to share with everyone who wants to hear about it.

One of the things we believe is that when people are married for time and all eternity, they can be together forever, even after death. I went to a funeral today for a 29 year old man who left behind a wife of 2 years and a big extended family. What a sad day. Yet I know that there's a silver lining. This life is not all there is. His family will see him again. This isn't the end.

Who knew that Matilda clothes sell for more on ebay than buying them straight from Matilda!?! BTW, for all you locals, I'm hosting a trunk show in August so I can get first pick of all the new fall stuff. Let me know if you want an invite! Their clothes are a little pricey, but I figure I'd rather have a few nice outfits than a million target outfits. Now I just need to stop shopping the children's section everytime I go buy groceries.
